The tourism product is a complex mix of the built and natural environment - and people. Tourism planners and policy makers are placing increasing importance on understanding the impact that tourism, tourist activities and the level of destination development has on the community. We have developed a model of the interactions of these elements of tourism to guide our research into assisting tourism agencies to better manage their destinations.

For tourism to be successful in a destination, it must be seen as fully integrated with other sectors that operate in the destination; it can't be seen as a 'stand alone' entity. The work that the Directors of TBEI and our associates have done in this area engages with key stakeholders across the destination, not simply with the tourism sector. Tourism can only realise its potential for the destination if it works symbiotically with other sectors to achieve whole of destination goals.
